Global Talent - Helping grow Australia’s innovation and tech economies

Relocating during a global pandemic was probably not on Linda Somerville’s list of New Year Resolutions in January 2020. However, fast-forward eleven months and Linda’s wealth of experience in biotechnology R&D programs, including her work for Innovate UK, has seen her land in Adelaide, with the support of Australia’s Global Talent Visa Program.

Linda’s skillset lies in the commercialisation sector, mainly assisting SMEs as she has a complete understanding of the science whilst also appreciating the struggles SMEs have. She is now looking to offer the Australian biotech industry the benefit of not only her skills and knowledge, but also her deep connections with the UK’s biotech ecosystem as she settles into her new home State of South Australia. 

“Adelaide is a hub for world-class health and medical research,” said Linda. “The biomedical precinct based in North Terrace includes the new Royal Adelaide Hospital, the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute and the University of Adelaide Health and Medical Sciences building.  There is certainly lots going on here, including opportunities for research collaboration between our two countries.” 

“For experienced professionals the Global Talent Visa Program is fantastic. Following my invitation to apply, the application was processed through to permanent residency in 12 days, thereby offering security to plan my life changing move. I’m still stunned at the speed of processing – well done to all the staff involved,” she added.  

Linda is also clearly enjoying the Australian lifestyle. “Of all the cities I have lived in during my career, Adelaide is the best – a fantastic city, so easy to navigate, very vibrant and really welcoming.  It’s close to both the ocean and to the hills, suiting every lifestyle. What’s not to love?”

Australia’s Global Talent Visa Program is aimed at highly skilled individuals who are high-income earners, and has been designed to grow Australia’s innovation and tech economies. The seven future-focused target sectors include AgTech, Space and Advanced Manufacturing, FinTech, Energy and Mining Technology, MedTech, Cyber Security, and Quantum Information, Advanced Digital, Data Science and ICT. 

The Australian Government has also recently established a Global Business and Talent Attraction Taskforce to provide streamlined pathways to Australia for high yield businesses and exceptional talent.
