United Kingdom and Europe

South Australia is represented in the UK and Germany with our trade and investment office in London, headed up by David Ridgway, Agent General for South Australia. It offers a range of services including facilitating UK and European foreign direct investment into South Australia and providing in-market knowledge, connections and advice.

In Germany, Trade and Investment Manager Pallavi Mishra is supporting South Australia’s relationship with Europe, building networks and opportunities for partnerships.

Overview

Australia and the United Kingdom (UK) have enjoyed a long-standing trade and investment partnership. With the UK no longer part of the European Union, South Australia has an opportunity to strengthen cooperation through the new Australia-UK Free Trade Agreement.

Europe continues to be an important partner for South Australia, with opportunities across defence, energy and mining and health and medical industries.

As Europe’s biggest player in renewable hydrogen, Germany provides opportunities for investment related to South Australia’s Hydrogen Jobs Plan and is a major importer of manufacturing inputs, central to key supply chains. The South Australian Government announced the opening of their German office in 2023.

Sector opportunities

The UK and Europe are significant markets for South Australian wines, particularly at the premium end of the market. As a global leader in wine product innovation and a reliable supplier of world-leading premium wine, South Australia is well placed to grow its market share in the UK and Europe.

The FTA will provide valuable opportunities for food, beverage and consumer producers, as well as strengthening supply chains, when it comes into force.

Whilst there are challenges to entering the health and medical industries sector in the UK and Europe, there are also plenty of opportunities. The UK health market is one of the largest in the world, with the National Health Service (NHS), treating a million patients every 36 hours. South Australian health and medical companies can tap into this huge pipeline across pharmaceuticals, medicine supplies, therapeutic goods and medical devices.

With Germany one of the world’s leading manufacturing production economies and largest exporters, there are opportunities for South Australian companies looking to enter the region in areas such as renewable energy, critical technologies, health and medtech.

In Europe, companies are looking for solutions to reduce global footprint. South Australia’s credentials in the renewable energy are renowned as we lead the nation in the uptake of renewable energy.

Due to our abundance of natural assets, including significant renewable energy zones for wind and solar, mineral deposits of copper, gold, iron ore, graphite, gas and petroleum products, the global demand for our resources is high.
