Giant support for baseball on global stage

A baseball partnership between Adelaide and Tokyo is a Giant win for South Australia, paving the way for greater business opportunities and connections with the State’s trade partner.

Tokyo-based Yomiuri Giants met with the State’s Trade and Investment Minister Nick Champion in Japan this week, to invest in a partnership with Adelaide’s baseball team, also named the Giants.

The relationship between the Japan and South Australian teams is becoming a growing contributor to the strengthening relationship between Adelaide and Tokyo, whose players visit each other’s cities during their respective off-seasons.

The partnership will create opportunities for Japanese players to visit for spring training, creating player development leading to greater investment in baseball.

Kanto Region Junto Baseball Federation is also sending two teams to Adelaide in November as the start of the partnership moving forward.

The ties will open the floodgates for greater sports diplomacy, and local tourism opportunities during Japan’s off season, bringing with it trade partnerships and greater investment in South Australian skills.

The Yomiuri Giants are the most successful franchise in the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) League with 22 championships. Japan has a big reputation for producing high-quality baseball players, who are often recruited into Major League Baseball in the US.

This follows on from the success of the South Australian-sponsored Adelaide 36ers basketball team tour of the USA.

The 36ers made waves when they became the first Australian National Basketball League team to defeat an American National Basketball Association team, the Phoenix Suns.
