International seaweed harvesting company CH4 will create up to 100 jobs in Port Lincoln after being awarded an $80,000 Landing Pad grant to assist in establishing operations in the region.

A company establishing a new seaweed cattle feed supplement industry in Australia hopes to set up thousands of hectares in South Australia’s regions, stemming from several 20ha sites to be established next year.

CH4 Global, which has operations in South Australia and New Zealand, has been learning about the growth of asparagopsis – a type of seaweed - through trials at SARDI’s West Beach centre and work in Port Lincoln.

In March, the company signed a Heads of Agreement with the Narungga National Aboriginal Corporation. The unique partnerships paves the way for commercial-scale asparagopsis seaweed cultivation and processing within the footprint of the Narungga native title in South Australia.
